Insurmountable Odds

“If we start the season in training camp and you come to me and say we’re going to give you three cracks to win the championship, I’m going to take that. So I’m excited about this.” – Kobe Bryant

There have been one-hundred and seventy-four 3-1 deficits. Only 8 teams (8-166 .046) have come back from such a deficit.

The odds of overcoming a 3-1 deficit drop even further when factoring in homecourt advantage. Only 2 teams (2-118 .017) have come back from a 3-1 deficit without the benefit of homecourt.

Twenty-eight teams have trailed 3-1 in the NBA Finals.

All 28 lost the NBA championship.

Notable comebacks:

2006: Phoenix Suns come back after trailing the Los Angeles Lakers 3-1.

2003: Detroit Pistons come back after trailing the Orlando Magic 3-1.

1997: Miami Heat come back after trailing the New York Knicks 3-1.

1995: Houston Rockets come back after trailing the Phoenix Suns 3-1.

1981: Boston Celtics come back after trailing the Philadelphia 76ers 3-1.

“This is not over. The series is not over.” – Phil Jackson

It’s definitely not over. I still don’t feel like the Lakers have played a solid game yet.

Kobe needs to score for the Lakers to win. He’s not a good passer, and his teammates are like deers in headlights.

However, Boston is very prone to offensive lapses. LA still has the best coach, and the best player.

LA has the talent to do it, I just don’t think they play enough defense to win 3 straight.
