H-O-R-S-E: Gervin vs. Maravich

I’d like to see this competition at All-Star weekend.  I think it would be more entertaining than the 3-point contest or the Shooting Stars competition.

Enjoyed that video. I didn’t even realize they had those contests back in the day. Simple game, but a lot of possibilities. Never thought about it at the All-Star weekend, but that certainly makes more sense than some of the events they have now.

Maravich had the perfect skill-set for a game of HORSE. I’d bet on him against anyone from the modern era.

    Hey Shooter,

Glad you enjoyed the video. I should have added a little more info to this. I’ll probably update it now. But the video was taken in 1978 when the NBA had a horse competition. Of course, Maravich won it. Pistol beat Bob McAdoo, George “Iceman” Gervin, and Kevin Grevey to win the tournament.

The NBDL had a HORSE competition last season. The NBDL has become a testing ground for the NBA so who knows, maybe we’ll see it in the NBA soon.

I think it would be incredibly entertaining to see Steve Nash face off against Dwight Howard in a game of HORSE. No dunks allowed of course.

    :)

Wow, look at them. They don’t have a drop of sweat on them when they started, and their hair is perfect.

    They didn’t warm up, apparently.

There are definitely a lot of horse match ups I would like to see, but I don’t know about a tournament or anything. A horse game can go a LOOONG time.

Plus Pete’s shots were mostly trick shots, Gervin’s were skill shots. What I’d both hate and enjoy are complicated trick shots that aren’t game legal. You could get yourself 4 of these, then show up and eliminate your competitor without ever taking a legit shot.

Yes, the NBADL had a horse competition and Morse Almond of the Utah Flash was either the winner or the runner up, I can’t remember.

Speaking of testing bed, the D-League is testing version 2.0 of the infamous NBA composite leather ball. It looks like it will definitely make it to the NBA in the near future, and be better than the last ball, and perhaps better than solid leather balls.

    Basketballogy,

If the NBA brings back the HORSE competition, I’m in favor of allowing trick shots. I’d like to see what a guy like Nash has up his sleeves.
