Sekou Smith of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution: “Former Hawks swingman Josh Childress has signed with Olympiakos of Greece, a three-year, fully guaranteed contract worth far more than the $20 million initially believed to be his prize. Could there be a more stunning turns of events for fans who thought Childress was destined to remain in a Hawks’ uniform for at least the next four or five years?”
D.C. Sports Blog: “You guys are looking at me like I’m the hero up here, but these guys are the heroes,” he said of the trio. “We just have a great group of guys. I know everybody’s here to see me, but it’s about this team. They’ve done a great job, and we’re gonna put a banner up there, a championship banner, we’re gonna do it for Mr. Pollin. That’s what kind of talent, that’s what kind of team, that’s what kind of belief we have….We have to start today, and these three guys up here are going to be the reason….They’ve got to lead us. We’re just gonna follow their drums.” - Gilbert Arenas
Jeff McDonald of The San Antonio Express-News: “It is appearing more and more like Robert Horry’s days as a Spur are over. Horry, who won two of his seven NBA championships with the Spurs, has said he wants to play a 17th NBA season and would prefer to do it in San Antonio. However, dialogue between Horry and the Spurs has been scant. Thomas’ decision to re-sign could mark the end of Horry’s days in silver and black. Unless Horry attracts interest elsewhere, he could be forced to retire, putting an end to his distinguished career as one of the top NBA role players of all-time.”
Awful Announcing: “Well I’m glad that crisis is diverted. What’s that? The Olympics start in two weeks??? Oh. I guess that slipped my mind. So they still have $100 million dollars worth of spots to fill in that time frame with all the big advertisers on board? Gotcha. The largest package that NBC sells is apparently $10 million and the smallest a $500K deal (according to the deals offered Barack Obama), so it’s not out of the realm of possibility. It’s not likely though.”
Dan Labbe of The Plain Dealer: “Admittedly, Ron Artest has had some character issues. And there was that whole single-handedly destroying one of the East’s best teams a few years back because somebody hit him with a cup. But to go out and acquire Artest right now would be a relatively safe gamble. His contract is up after this season, so if it doesn’t work out the Cavs can turn around and try to move his $8.5 million in February or just let him walk next summer. On top of that, Mike Brown has coached Artest in the past and he seems to be just the type of player Brown loves.”
Tim MacMahon of The Dallas Morning News: “The Mavs were willing to give him that chance because Green is only 22 years old and has tons of untapped potential. It’s up to the folks with offices at the AAC to repair the damage the AAU system did to Green’s game. Green is a world-class dunker. He’s a pretty good 3-point shooter. And he can’t do anything else at an NBA level. As Rick Carlisle says, the Mavs will try to convert him from showman to basketball player. The AAU system is all about flash, not fundamentals. Green’s game reflects that.”
