If you’re not reading X’s and O’s of Basketball, you should be. It’s a phenomenal resource for coaches and anyone who wants to learn more about the game. Today, they posted a video of Magic Johnson appearing on the Charlie Rose Show. The interview runs a little long (24:15), but X’s and O’s does a great job of highlighting a few of the more poignant moments.

At about the 1:30 mark, Magic talks about some of the lessons he learned from his father. Every Saturday, Magic would get up at 7:00 AM to help his father haul trash. One cold Michigan morning, Magic ignored some trash stuck in ice, grabbed what he could, and hurried back into the truck. Magic’s father grabbed him out of the truck, dragged him back to the barrels, and said “Son, you’ve got do a job and put 100% effort, not just here, but in everything in life.”

Magic says that taught him that he had to “put 100% effort into everything and do it the right way.”
