Another Look at 2008

NBATV’s top ten plays of the the season thus far:

Pretty weak highlight film if you ask me. I’ve seen at least two or three dunks from LeBron James that could have cracked the top ten.

Jan Hubbard of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram compiled some of the best quotes of 2008. Here are a few of my favorites:

“We never penalize a lack of wisdom — with commissioners, owners or players.” — NBA commissioner David Stern, in October, on why Josh Howard was not fined for controversies the Mavs’ swingman was involved in during the off-season

“We’re taking advantage of the boom in basketball coming out of Beijing. Despite the terrible economy, the timing is good to make this announcement.” — NBA deputy commissioner Adam Silver in The New York Times, talking about the NBA’s decision to invest in 12 arenas in China. On the same October day in London, commissioner David Stern announced that 9 percent of the NBA’s U.S. work force would be laid off. Announcing expansion and job cuts at the same time seemingly demonstrates a lack of wisdom, but apparently deputy commissioners are not penalized, either.

“It’s probably bad to write a check for $175 million, but it’s going to get worse. When you go visit your kids, there’s going to be a guy sitting in your chair, wearing your robe, smoking a cigar. You better hope it ain’t one of us. You better hope it ain’t one of your boys. We’re all looking for a woman with $175 million.” — Charles Barkley, recounting a conversation with Michael Jordan after Jordan told Barkley his divorce settlement cost $175 million

Talkhoops.net created New Year’s Resolutions for a few NBA players, coaches, and teams:

Tracy McGrady – Save some of his injuries for key playoff games. You don’t want to use them all up in the regular season.
Josh Howard – Celebrate his 50th day without doing or saying something stupid by smoking a ton, driving drunk and crashing into an American flag store.
Mike D’Antoni – Kick himself for not waiting until after the draft lottery to choose the Knicks over the Bulls, but be thankful that the Knicks will upgrade the point guard position at this year’s draft.
Nate Robinson – Ruin more dunk contests.
Larry Brown – Bet Michael Jordan $10,000 that he won’t trade him to another team. It may be his only way out.
Sasha Vujacic – Request a bigger percentage of Wall-E’s grosses since they used his image and likeness.
China – Ruin more All Star Games.
Stephon Marbury – Make outrageous claims like chestnuts are lazy and he invented the question mark.

    Wow Hoff,
you’re right that was a HORRIBLE top 10. The Wade Dunk, the Murphy tip in, and the Roy three were the only ones in there that i found memorable.

Lebron had better blocks than the one they used. The alley-oop to josh smith..? LeBron had a better dunk in that same QUARTER. Oh well.

It was weak wasn’t it? I liked the alley to J. Smith. Kobe’s oop was pretty sick too. But LeBron has been a human highlight film this season. I refuse to believe that NBATV couldn’t come up with a better highlight clip than that.

    Cheers.

Nate robinson will get a chance to ruin more dunk contests in the 2009 dunk contest. In 2007, he sucked so badly in the end, that it took him 10 tries just to complete an off-the-glass 360. Starbury’s next outrageous claim is that he told Kevin Garnett that he would go to Celtics after 8 straight season without going to the playoffs. But that would only happen if Stephon actually completes the deal with Boston.
